Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a GP referral to see a men’s health specialist?
A referral is not required to book a private consultation, and you are welcome to contact us directly. If you have any relevant test results, imaging or clinic letters, please share them with your consultant’s secretary before your appointment where possible.
If you are using private medical insurance, please check your policy beforehand, as your insurer may require a letter from a GP or another healthcare professional to authorise your consultation.
What happens at a first men’s health appointment at London Urology Specialists?
Your consultant will take a detailed history, discuss your symptoms in full, and where clinically appropriate perform an examination. Simple tests (such as urine or blood tests) can often be arranged the same day; imaging or specialist procedures are typically scheduled separately.
Your consultant will explain their initial assessment and outline the recommended next steps, whether that is further investigation, active surveillance, or treatment.
Can I be seen urgently for symptoms like blood in urine or a testicular lump?
Yes. Symptoms such as visible blood in the urine (haematuria), a new testicular lump, sudden severe pain, or acute urinary retention warrant prompt specialist assessment. We aim to offer appointments within 24–48 hours of your enquiry, and same-day appointments may be available for urgent concerns — please contact our team to arrange this.
Do you treat men of all ages?
Yes. Our consultants provide specialist care for men across all adult age groups — from young adults with testicular symptoms, kidney stones or urinary concerns, through to older men with prostate cancer, enlarged prostate, urinary incontinence and complex reconstructive needs. We also offer adolescent urology for young men transitioning from paediatric to adult services.
Which conditions does the Men’s Health Clinic treat most often?
Our Men’s Health Clinic provides expert care for a wide range of urological conditions, including enlarged prostate (BPH), prostatitis, urinary symptoms, overactive bladder, urinary incontinence, blood in the urine (haematuria), and penile, scrotal and testicular conditions, including vasectomy.
