FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a GP referral to see a female urology specialist?

A referral is not required to book a private consultation, and you are welcome to contact us directly. If you have any relevant test results, imaging or clinic letters, please share them with your consultant’s secretary before your appointment where possible.

If you are using private medical insurance, please check your policy beforehand, as your insurer may require a letter from a GP or another healthcare professional to authorise your consultation.

What happens at a first women’s urology appointment at London Urology Specialists?

Your consultant will take a detailed history, discuss your symptoms in full, and where clinically appropriate perform an examination. Simple tests (such as urine or blood tests) can often be arranged the same day; imaging or specialist procedures are typically scheduled separately.

Your consultant will explain their initial assessment and outline the recommended next steps, whether that is further investigation, monitoring, or treatment.

Can I be seen urgently for symptoms like blood in urine or recurrent UTIs?

Yes. Symptoms such as visible blood in the urine (haematuria), sudden severe pelvic pain, acute urinary retention, or persistent recurrent urinary tract infections warrant prompt specialist assessment. We aim to offer appointments within 24–48 hours of your enquiry, and same-day appointments may be available for urgent concerns — please contact our team to arrange this.

Do you offer mesh-free surgical options for prolapse and incontinence?

Yes. Honorary Associate Professor Jeremy Ockrim was among the first UK surgeons to pioneer non-mesh surgical techniques for female incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. Following widespread concerns about complications from vaginal mesh, we routinely offer mesh-free repair options — including autologous fascial slings for stress urinary incontinence and native tissue prolapse repair — as well as expert management of existing mesh complications.

Which conditions does the Women’s Health Clinic treat most often?

Our Women’s Health Clinic provides expert care for a wide range of urological conditions, including urinary incontinence (stress, urge and mixed), overactive bladder, pelvic organ prolapse, recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs), bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis, blood in the urine (haematuria), vaginal and urethral conditions including vesicovaginal fistulae, female urethral stricture and urethral diverticulae. Honorary Associate Professor Ockrim is one of the mesh complications accredited surgical team from University College London Hospital.
