Do I need a GP referral to be seen for cancer investigation?
A GP referral is not required to book a private consultation, and you are welcome to contact us directly. If you have any existing medical information relating to your condition, such as imaging, blood test results, clinic letters or investigation reports, please share these with your consultant's secretary before your appointment where possible. This allows your consultant to review your medical history in advance and helps ensure a more informed consultation.
If you are using private medical insurance, please note that most insurers require a referral from a healthcare professional to authorise your consultation. We recommend checking your policy with your insurer before your appointment.
Can I get a second opinion on an existing diagnosis?
Yes. Our consultants regularly provide second opinions on diagnoses and treatment plans made elsewhere, whether privately or on the NHS. We will review your existing imaging, biopsy results and reports, and provide a clear independent assessment. This is particularly common for prostate cancer, where active surveillance, focal therapy, radiotherapy and surgery may all be reasonable options.
What tests are used to diagnose urological cancer?
Investigations depend on the suspected cancer type. We use a combination of blood tests (including PSA and tumour markers), urine tests, ultrasound, CT and MRI imaging (including multiparametric prostate MRI), targeted or template prostate biopsy, cystoscopy for bladder cancer, and, where appropriate, PSMA PET-CT for prostate cancer staging.
Will my case be reviewed by a multidisciplinary team?
Yes. Every cancer case is reviewed at a multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting, bringing together urological surgeons, oncologists, specialist radiologists, histopathologists, nuclear medicine physicians and specialist nurses. This ensures your diagnosis and treatment plan reflects the collective expertise of the whole team, not a single specialist's view.
What treatment options are available?
Treatment depends on the type, stage and characteristics of your cancer. Our consultants provide specialist care for prostate, bladder, kidney and testicular cancers, developing personalised treatment plans based on the latest evidence and your individual circumstances.
Depending on your diagnosis, treatment options may include active surveillance for suitable low-risk cancers, robotic-assisted surgery, focal therapy (including HIFU, cryotherapy and NanoKnife®/IRE) for selected prostate cancers, and BCG treatment for suitable bladder cancers. Where appropriate, we work closely with trusted oncology colleagues to arrange radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, immunotherapy and other specialist treatments as part of a coordinated multidisciplinary approach.
