Expert Stone Treatment
Our Stone Clinic provides expert diagnosis, treatment and long-term management for kidney, ureteric and bladder stones. These common conditions can cause severe pain, blood in the urine, urinary infections and difficulty passing urine, often requiring prompt specialist assessment.
We offer rapid access to our dedicated stone specialist for patients with suspected or confirmed urinary tract stones. Using the latest minimally invasive techniques, including laser lithotripsy, extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL) and percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), we tailor treatment to each patient’s needs.
Our care extends beyond stone removal. Through comprehensive metabolic assessment, stone analysis and personalised prevention strategies, we identify the underlying causes of stone formation and help reduce the risk of future episodes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a GP referral to see a stone specialist?
A GP referral is not required to book a private consultation, and you are welcome to contact us directly. If you have any existing test results, imaging or clinic letters relating to your concern, please share these with your consultant’s secretary before your appointment where possible.
If you are using private medical insurance, please note that most insurers require a GP referral or referral letter to authorise your consultation — we recommend checking your policy with your insurer beforehand.
What happens at a first stone appointment at London Urology Specialists?
Your consultant will take a detailed history, discuss your symptoms and any previous stone episodes, and review any existing imaging or test results. Where imaging has not yet been performed, appropriate scans will be arranged (typically a CT KUB).
Your consultant will then explain their initial assessment and outline the recommended treatment plan, along with options for metabolic assessment to help prevent future stones.
What treatment options are available for kidney, ureteric and bladder stones?
Our dedicated stone specialist provides the full range of modern stone treatments, including laser lithotripsy, extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL) and percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). The most appropriate technique is chosen based on the size, location and composition of your stone, always aiming for the least invasive approach where possible.
How do you help prevent stones from coming back?
Around half of patients who develop a kidney stone will experience another within five years. Our comprehensive metabolic assessment includes 24-hour urine analysis, stone composition testing (where a stone is available), and personalised dietary and medical advice — helping to identify the underlying cause and reduce the risk of future stones.
What kinds of stones do you treat?
We treat all types and locations of urinary tract stones, including kidney stones, ureteric stones and bladder stones, as well as more complex cases such as staghorn calculi and recurrent stone formers requiring metabolic investigation.
